On this page I have chosen to spotlight the idea of screen casting, using an online tool called Screencast-O-Matic.
This online program is easily accessible and easy to use, even as a beginner. This tool allows you to record something you are doing on your computer screen and incorporate a voice over as it is recording.
For this example, I used screen casting when working with a colleague in my graduate class in order to present a Pecha Kucha presentation on Class Dojo, a behavior management system that can be used in the classroom. I have not yet used this in my classroom; however, I plan to try it for our next unit in math, which is on multiplication and division. I think it would be very beneficial for me to create a video of a specific strategy we are focusing on and give access to my students (via BCPS One) to watch the video as they are working through the independent practice. I could also use it with a small group if I need to reteach a specific skill. The use of screen casting would also be nice for parents because they could see you complete an example exactly how you showed the students in class. This could help them when they are trying to help their child at home with homework. It works especially well with a tablet where you can use your finger to write on it and record yourself talking through a problem as you are completing it.
